Calliope presents "SHEroes", concerts dedicated to celebrating
the lives and deeds of women heroes. The music honors diverse
women, both contemporary and historical. Led by Music Director
J. Michele Edwards and accompanied by Kathy Kraulik, the performances
take place on Saturday, November 19th (evening
concert, 8 pm) and Sunday, November 20th (afternoon
concert, 3 pm).
This concert series will highlight music by and about lesbian
sheroes, but recognizes a broad range of women. Featured music
is by Sue Fink, Holly Near, Ysaye M. Barnwell, Sally Monk, and
Joan Szymko, along with Twin Cities composers Dorothy Williams,
Ann Reed and Anita Ruth. The chorus sings about well-known SHEroes
such as Harriet Tubman, Joan of Arc and Billie Holiday alongside
everyday SHEroes such as Lisa Kalvelage and the "disappeared"
in South America.
This concert program will encourage us all to believe we can be
a shero through our own activism and daily commitment to important
social issues. These women make important contributions to the
visibility of women as significant social "actors,”
contributing to historical events and shaping the present and
thus the future of our world. The music celebrates contributions
by historic women sheroes, recognizes that each of us can be a
shero, and nudges us to accept this challenge.
